The New South Wales city of Lismore lies to the north-east of the state and boasts a population in excess of 28,000. The earliest record of European settlers in the area was in 1843 when Captain Dumaresq decided it was a good place to graze sheep, although within 2 years he released he could not make it a going concern and by January 1845 the new residents were William and Jane Wilson, originally from the Scottish island of Lismore, after which the city is named. The city has an extremely successful racecourse, with racing administered by the Lismore Turf Club. The all grass track is capable of staging races up to 2100 metres, with the principal race being the Lismore Cup held on the final Thursday each September. In total there are usually 13 meetings annually, held throughout the year, with other highlights being the Woodlawn Cup and the Evans Head Cup. |

Local Patrons | Lismore Jockey Club |
Although racing was held at Lismore in the 19th and early 20th century, in 1934 interest in racing in the city was at an all-time low. However, a number of prominent, well-known residents visited Gratfon Races and this rekindled their interest in forming a stronger Race Club. The area already had two race clubs, the Lismore Racing Club and the Hibernian Jockey Club, but when Gratfon advertised their races more widely they got a crowd in excess of 4000, with an increase on the first day alone of 340 punters, and Lismore officials saw this as a target for a newly formed ‘Lismore Hibernian Jockey Club’. Their first meeting was planned for July 1934, then later 25th August until it finally took place on Saturday 1st September 1934 with an underwhelming programme:- a Maiden Handicap; Third Division Purse; Second Division Purse, First Division Purse and Hack Race, with total prize money of £38. However, better times were to come, especially at their Lismore Cup meetings, with early Cup results shown below. |
